We bake products that contribute to a balanced American lifestyle.  We embrace manufacturing practices that contribute to a safe environment and are firmly committed to creating a more sustainable future by shrinking our carbon footprint, eliminating waste, and preserving resources.

Our formal commitment to sustainability dates back to 1996, and is built on five guiding principles:

Reduce.

Since 2004 we have:

  • Converted 96% of our regulated appliances to more efficient, eco-conscious systems
  • Reduced refrigeration usage by 58%

Remove.

We have:

  • Eliminated more than 2,000 underground storage tanks to protect against groundwater and soil contamination
  • Eliminated all known mercury containing devices from our manufacturing facilities
  • Decreased the number and toxicity of cleaning chemicals
  • Set a goal of zero hazardous waste from our manufacturing process

Reuse.

Hostess Brands operates 20 wastewater pre-treatment facilities. In 2009, we:

  • Treated 178.6 MM gallons of water for return to local sewer facilities for reuse
  • Developed a “best practices” program to minimize water use
  • Convert edible waste products to hog feed

Recycle.

Hostess Brands tracks 11 waste streams, from paper to light bulbs. In the 12-month cycle ending in September, 2009 we recycled 89% of solid waste from our plants.

Report.

We have instituted a program to track our consumption of resources, such as refrigerant, water, electrical, and natural gas by facility. These quarterly numbers help us identify areas for improvement and measure our success.
