We provide clear nutritional labeling on all our products to help empower consumers to make informed and healthy choices. We are commited to the following nutrition principles:
Transfats. We have already reformulated many of our snack products so that they now contain zero grams of transfat, as defined by FDA guidelines. That is our model moving forward as well, developing products that are fresh, great tasting and high quality.
Sodium Reduction. We are actively working towards lowering sodium levels in our products. All new breads will be introduced to the market with reduced sodium levels and we are already getting started. For example, our Nature's Pride line of bread, buns and rolls are made with lower sodium and 100% all natural ingredients. We have also launched Wonder Smartwhite® with one-third less sodium than standard white bread. In November 2010, we partnered with the National Sodium Reduction Initiative (NSRI) to commit to meet their sodium reduction guidelines by 2012.
Healthy Products for Schools. Hostess Brands is expanding bread choices for schools to include breads and buns made with whole grains and whole wheat.
Low Calorie Options. We will continue to provide consumers with a range of options, to support their efforts to enjoy their snacks in moderation.
Research & Development for Good Health. We will constantly evaluate our classic snack cake and bread recipes, while at the same time moving forward aggressively to incorporate the latest nutritional research into new products. For example, we are currently working on several nutritional on-the-go products that provide fiber and whole grains and reduce calories.
Tools for Consumers. We will explore ways of providing additional tools that help consumers make smart choices, such as our Sandwich Wonder-izer®, an online tool and free app for the iPhone and iTouch that enables consumers to calculate a sandwich's nutrition values in real time with each ingredient they add.
OUR COMMITMENT TO AGE-APPROPRIATE ADVERTISING
We will not advertise to children under the age of 12, unless the products meet a strict set of "better for you" standards, as defined by the USDA's "Healthier U.S. School Challenge." These standards include limitations on calories, fats and sugars.
Our snack cakes are fresh and delicious treats that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Most of our products contain zero grams of trans fat. Beloved classic treats like Hostess Twinkies and CupCakes range from just 130 to 180 calories - less than many granola bars. However, they are treats and should be consumed in moderations as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle.
