Did You Know?

Twinkies were "born" on April 6, 1930 by Continential bakery manager James A. Dewar in Schiller Park, Ill. He was experimenting with ideas on how to put the unused shortcake pans to work. Since strawberries were out of season, Dewar decided to fill them with a creamy banana flavored filling instead. At two-for-a-nickel, Twinkies became the most popular and affordable treat during the Great Depression. During banana rationing in WWII, the creme filling was substituted to vanilla, and customers loved it so much, we kept it! Since then, Twinkies have been deep fried at the Texas State Fair and even included in the millennium time capsule as "an object of enduring American symbolism."
